Canada — August 29, 1905
Construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway began on the Canadian prairies in 1905, the year that the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan joined Canadian confederation, with the first sod turned near Carberry, Manitoba on August 29.
