408 Tactical Fighter Squadron was disbanded.
Manitoba — July 5, 1970 to July 15, 1970
Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and Princess Anne embarked on a Royal Tour of Canada for the centenary of Manitoba's and the Northwest Territories' entries into Confederation. The family visited Churchill, Thompson, Gillam, Flin Flon, Norway House, Swan River, The Pas, Dauphin, Clear Lake, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Oakville, Winnipeg, Carman, Beauséjour, and Lower Fort Garry. They also enjoyed some personal time at the Bailey Farm near Carberry, Manitoba.

Manitoba celebrated its centennial.
1971
As a result of the unification of the Canadian armed forces, RCAF Station Rivers was renamed CFB Rivers.
September 1971
CFB Rivers closed.
Manitoba — 1972
The Winnipeg Jets hockey team played their first season in the World Hockey Association (WHA). They joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979 when the WHA merged with the NHL. In 1995, the team moves to Arizona and is renamed the Arizona Coyotes.
September 1972
The land on which CFB Rivers was located is turned over to the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development for use as an industrial training centre for Manitoba Indians. The training centre was known as the Oo-Za-We-Kwun Centre.
1974 to 1984
Rivers Gliding School, a summer Air Cadet glider camp, opened at the former CFB Rivers base in 1974, remaining until 1984, when it relocated to Gimli.
Canada — January 22, 1979
Edward Schreyer, 16th Premier of Manitoba (1969 to 1977), was sworn in as Canada's 22nd Governor-General. He served in this capacity until 1984.
