1960-1969

December 1963

No.1 Transport Helicopter Platoon (No.1 THP), a unit of the Royal Canadian Army Services Corps, was established at Rivers, Manitoba, along with their fleet of CH-113A Voyageur transport helicopters and CH-112 Nomad. The platoon’s function was to support the Army in field exercises.

1964

408 Tactical Fighter Squadron, whose primary functions were reconnaissance and weapons delivery, moved to Rivers in 1964 from RCAF Station Rockcliffe (Ontario) and remained until disbanded on April 1, 1970.

The new Canadian Maple Leaf Flag was raised on Parliament Hill.

Canada — 1966

No.1 Transport Helicopter Platoon (No.1 THP) moved from Rivers, Manitoba, to RCAF St.Hubert and also established a detachment at RCAF Station Namao (Alberta).

Canada — April 27, 1967 to October 29, 1967

Canada celebrated its centennial with a world's fair (Expo 67) in Montreal.

Canada — July 1, 1967

Canada celebrates its centennial of confederation.

Manitoba — July 23, 1967 to August 6, 1967

Winnipeg hosted the 1967 Pan American Games.

1968

The Canadian Forces were unified, and an era of budget cuts began. CFB Rivers was declared surplus to defence needs, as were several other bases across the country.

World — July 20, 1969

Humanity reached a monumental milestone when American astronaut Neil Armstrong made history as the first person to walk on the moon. His iconic words, "This is one small step for man, but one giant leap for mankind," perfectly captured the significance of the event.
