Here is southern Manitoba as it appeared in geography books before the Nineteenth Century ended, when Brandon vigorously sought recognition as a railroad hub. The map shows how (with dates) the various lines spread throughout the province's southwest. New townsites arose, while some earlier-settled but bypassed districts moved en bloc to the nearest point along the steel highway, several such communities being renamed in the process (see titles in parentheses).
