Ken Storie

Since retiring from a 29 year career as a teacher and principal, Ken Storie has worked on a variety of research, writing and project management activities, generally related to local history. Under contracts with municipal governments, and local heritage organizations, Ken and his wife, Beverly, produced a series of Heritage Projects developed by the Historic Resources Branch under the heading: “Our Essential Past: Special Places, Notable People and Pivotal Events”. This involved working with several municipalities in western Manitoba, including Riverdale, where they also produced:

  • The Grand Trunk Pacific in Rivers, Manitoba.
  • TRAIN TRACKS: Stories from a Railway Town – Rivers, Manitoba
  • The Sekine Story
  • CFB Rivers Virtual Tour
  • Rivers Daly Heritage Website

From 2011 to 2024, Ken served on the board of the Turtle Mountain Souris Plains Heritage Association. During that time, he undertook numerous research projects, including the writing of three booklets in the Vantage Points Series.

He has also been associated with the production of the following documentary films in various capacities:

  • "Postcard From the Past" – Research and on-camera interviews in two short episodes.
  • "Brandon’s Steamy Past" – Documentary Video – Writing & Narration
  • "Turtle Mountain Mud – Manitoba's Coal Mines – Direction, Writing & Narration
  • "Whitewater Lake – The Beauty & the Challenge" – Research & Consultation

Ken currently sits on the board of the Manitoba Historical Society and serves on the Young Historians Committee.

For over 20 years, Ken maintained Virtual Manitoba, a website devoted to all things Manitoban. It contained all of his projects, as well as an extensive collection of photos, maps and resources.

Ken and Beverly have travelled all over Manitoba and have extensive knowledge of this province we call “home.” They have worked with the Rivers Train Station Restoration and Heritage Committee for many years saving the heritage of our community and area.

Thank you to them both for their tireless work on saving as much of Manitoba’s heritage as possible for future generations.
